Rain Gauges

The rain gauge was installed adjacent to the East Avenue and Plainfield Road intersection within the secure fenced area containing the large Village of La Grange water reservoir. This site was selected due to the controlled access, and due to the ideal open space characteristics, which offer the unobstructed collection of rainfall.

Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge System

The map exhibit provided depicts the relative positions of the sauging equipment installed for the study. The flow meters were installed in manhole structures located immediately upstream of the connection to the MWRD interceptor manhole. The rain gauge location is also shown relative to the Plainfield Road and East Avenue intersection. The location for each gauging point, defined by an adjacent street address has been listed in Table 10.

Backup Prevention

Backup Prevention

A sewer backup-homeowners worst nightmare! Sewer lines are normally never thought about, because we can’t see them on a daily basis. But in the event of a sewer backup, boy will you notice! From slow flowing drains to major overflow debris covering the floor, a sewer backup can wreak havoc on your home and belongings. The best way to deal with a sewer backup is to prevent one!

Maintain your sewer lateral-First of all, what is a sewer lateral? It is the pipeline between your house and the city’s sewer main. As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to ensure the line’s upkeep. Pro Tip-check your current homeowner’s policy to see if it includes a Sewage Backup Endorsement. If not, you can add this to your policy which will cover damages associated with sewage backup

Watch what you flush-paper towels, diapers, feminine products, and grease are the main culprits when it comes to a clog in the sewer line.  When grease cools, it solidifies and can majorly block the sewer line, forcing waste to back up. The other mentioned items take a long time to deteriorate and can sit in the line causing a back up. Prop tip-Install drain baskets or strainers to catch solid objects that might slip into the line

Install a sump pump-If you currently do not have a sump pump, we strongly recommend installing one. The purpose of a sump pump is to quickly

remove excess water, either from heavy rainfall or an emergency situation like a faulty appliance or sewer backup. Sump pumps are relatively inexpensive and can be installed easily. If you do have an existing sump pump, make sure to inspect it regularly to ensure it kicks on when needed. Pro tip-We recommend installing a submersible sump pump as opposed to a pedestal sump pump. The submersible pump can handle more volume and the motor is not susceptible to water damage

If you have experienced a sewer backup call for immediated assistance.

Emergency Sewer/Water Problems

Emergency Sewer/Water Problems

What is a sewer emergency?

  • A backed up basement or lowest level of the home taking in sewage without using water in the home.
  • A SLTSD manhole or clean out at the property line that is overflowing onto the ground.
  • A surcharged sewer main (such as one caused by heavy rain) causing a sewer back up in homes.

What is a water emergency?

  • A broken water main in the street which causes flooding/collapsing of the roadway or icy conditions in the winter.
  • A service leak outside of the home in the yard area causing flooding conditions and/or hazardous conditions such as collapse of yard or sidewalk areas, icy conditions in the winter.
  • A broken pipe inside the home causing flooding conditions and the inside valve is inoperable. A village registered  plumber or a SLTSD technician can make a turn off at the street.
